Hi
,
Not to harp on the issue of the news too deeply, but I ran into some scriptures the other day that jumped out at me in a new way. So here’s the issue... There is no Christian alive in the US at this moment who hasn't felt a degree of depression, despair, frustration - or whatever word you'd use to describe it - at the news and the sinful attitudes and actions of various people portrayed in the news. Negativity is
indeed a weight on the soul, and a constant barrage of that only weighs it down more. Many people have become "hand-wringers".
But, I don't think that this is how the Lord wants us to act. Here are just two things that might help us stay on track...
1. Remember that your mind is somewhat like a computer. What you feed into it is going to effect it. Allowing a constant barrage of negative (and remember, the news is almost always negative; good news isn't news) is going to slow you down, depress you, change your focus, and can cause physical harm as well. This is one reason why God gave us
Philippians 4:8 ~ "...whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." The news is not filled with these things, but there
are many things that are. If we focus on the good instead of the bad, our spirits are lifted.
2. Second, there are three great verses that come to mind that help us understand our position with God during times like this. The first is Ezekiel 9:4 ~ "The LORD said to him, "Pass through the city... and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it". The second is Malachi 3:16 ~
"Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord...". The last is Nahum 1:7 ~ "The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him."
