It is rare to see leopards since they blend in very well with their surroundings. Here are some fascinating facts about these cats:
1. They are one of the three large cats found in Africa, the other two being the lion and the cheetah.
2. Leopards are essentially nocturnal - another reason they are rarely seen.
3. Leopards are solitary, except when finding a mate.
4. Males are larger than females. A male can weigh up to 165 pounds, while the females can weigh 135 pounds.
5. They can live between 12-17 years in the wild.
6. Leopards' spots differ from those of a cheetah in that they're actually not spots, but rosettes. You can see them in the middle of its back. They're like rings of smaller spots.
7. Leopard cubs are blind at birth. Once their eyes open after one or two weeks, they are bright blue for a number of weeks.
8. Female leopards can give birth to up to three cubs, who will stay with her for about two years.
9. Leopards are amazingly strong. If all of the large cats were the same size, the leopard would be the strongest.
10. Leopards can be very ferocious, and can run close to 40 miles per hour. They can leap straight up about 10 feet!
The Bible refers to these creatures at least seven times. In some instances, their natural characteristics are mentioned, but in others, they are referred to in prophetic verses.
