Hi , When you consider chameleons, you probably immediately think of their ability to change color. They can blend into their surroundings amazingly, and they don't have to think
about their camouflage. But, did you know that there are other factors that influence their color changes? Moods, for example, can produce an amazing variety of not only colors, but patterns. They can express anger by changing their colors starkly, and also by blowing up the membranes below their mouths like a balloon. They can hiss quite loudly, too! Chameleons can communicate a wide array of specific messages by their colors. Amazingly, too, chameleons didn't have to learn this unique
"language". They know it automatically by instinct! |
Another incredible feature of this reptile is its ability to hold onto a something, like a branch, and then hold its body straight out while it reaches for the next thing to walk onto, like this chameleon is doing.
By way of illustration, picture an Olympic gymnastics athlete performing on the rings. The one here is performing what's called an "iron cross". This is almost impossible for a human to do, and it can only be achieved through great strength training, and even then, can only be maintained for several seconds. A chameleon can hold its entire body straight out, without any training whatsoever!
It doesn't end there, though! A chameleon's eyes can move in two different directions at the same time. It can watch two separate things at once. So, while sitting quietly on a branch, it can watch what's going on all around it. When an insect lands near it, it can focus on it with both eyes to get a better handle on the distance and accuracy of its attack.
