Hi , OK, just tell me that God doesn't have a sense of humor! The beautiful,
gold-colored beetle you see here to the right is a type of tortoise beetle. We had a certain variety of them in South Africa, though I didn't see them very often. The exoskeleton (outer shell that gives it its shape) forms a type of disc, and the beetle's legs can be seen under it. When danger approaches, they can secure their feet and pull the disc down to the surface of whatever they're walking on, and it forms a sort-of seal to protect the
beetle. So, OK..... that's really pretty cool! However, in the larva form, certain types of these beetles do something strange, apparently also to protect themselves. They
place their "poop" on their backs! That's what's going on here to the left. Researchers think that just the looks of this might make it appear inedible to a predator, while others say that the taste of it might make it disgusting. No kidding! And, by the way, these "poop structures" take on all kinds of forms. It's just another aspect of the amazing world of design that's so apparent all around us. But, to me, it also shows that the Designer has a distinct sense of
humor!
