Click on the button below to watch a cute baby rhino. He was
playing with another one when he apparently decided he didn't want us there watching them, so he "attacked" us! Very scary indeed! :-) He runs past the others, then skids to a stop when he realizes that our Landcruiser isn't moving!
Cute as he is (here to the right), do you notice something about all of them in the video clip? They don't have horns! These are white rhinos, and their horns have
been purposely cut off by the rangers. This is actually saving their lives. Rhino horn (made of the same material as your fingernails) is highly valued in the Far East because of a lie. They believe it cures all kinds of ailments, from infertility to cancer. The black market in rhino horn has increased so dramatically that they're being killed faster than they can breed! So, this drastic measure had to be taken in at least this one game reserve. And it's
working! They haven't lost any now for three months!
The creation has been "groaning" in so many ways since the curse. The devil is the father of lies, and this particular one serves double -- rhino horn cures nothing, for starters, and because of the lie, these amazing creatures are suffering.
