Zombie ants!? This seems straight out of a horror movie!

Hi ,

In various parts of the world, mainly the jungle, ants are sometimes turned into "zombies". How? By a type of fungus. The fungus produces spores. If an unlucky ant comes in contact with them, a VERY strange thing can happen.

The spores' genetic information, once inside the ant, will transform it into a zombie.  The ant will now be specifically directed and controlled by the spore. It will make the ant leave its colony, and job, and walk to a specific point above the forest floor, usually about 10". (And, by the way, if another ant discovers an infected one, it will instinctively pick it up and carry it far away from the rest of the colony. It doesn't know why -- it just does it!) The spores makes the infected ant bite into a leaf or stem, locking it right there. This is something that the ant would not normally do. So, once the infected ant has locked onto the plant, it will die -- mercifully! What happens next is downright WEIRD! Describing it isn't enough.  Watch what happens by clicking below!

I realize we're in a fallen world, and that nature is groaning (Rom. 8:22). But even in its own way, this "horrible event" displays an amazing design by God, which by the way, also apparently serves to keep the numbers of certain ants in check. Go figure!

In Christ,
