"That's not Darwinism!"

Hi ,

I have sometimes been criticized for including, in my Pillars of Evolution seminar, the "big bang" scenario and also the original concept of "non-living matter becoming alive". The claim is often made that these things have nothing to do with Darwinian evolution.  Since Darwin's proposals centered on increased complexity, and one kind of creature turning into another kind, the criticism is technically correct.

However, to not include the secular explanation for how everything came to be, and how life supposedly originated, is like eating a sandwich without any bread.  Darwin's ideas MUST have some sort of foundation.  He has to have something to work with.  Nothing can become more complex if it isn't already there.  And something can't be already there if it didn't have an origin.

So, even though the big bang is not technically part of Darwinian evolution, it is absolutely foundational and necessary for Darwinism to even exist as a concept.  That's why we include these "pillars" in that seminar.
