The tiny deer you see to the right is a newborn steenbok, something most rangers
have never even seen! Normally, they're so well hidden in a thicket that you could never possibly know they're there. We were extremely blessed to have come across this. Initially, when our vehicle startled the mother, it looked like a rabbit lying on the ground where she'd been.
Steenbok are very small deer that as adults only weigh perhaps 25 lbs. They are loners
except when breeding. When in a dangerous situation, their instinct is to lie low in the grass, or freeze. But if the threat grows, they can dart away rapidly in a zig-zag pattern, then try the "freezing" routine again.
