Now, what about a millipede, pictured at left? It's also considered "gross", and also has way too many legs. Yet, why is someone (a lady, no less!) willing to hold it, but not hold a centipede? Do you know the difference between the two?
Here are some basic differences:
1. A millipede is normally a very slow-moving creature, while most types of centipedes can move very fast.
2. A millipede has at least two sets of legs per body segment. A Centipede has only one set of legs per body
segment.
3. Millipedes eats decaying plant matter, for the most part. Centipedes are carnivores! (OK, that's a REAL reason to hate them! They'll EAT you while you're sleeping!) :-) BWAHAHAHAHA!.....
4. Millipedes can't hurt you. A centipede can sting with a unique hollow leg structure in the first
segment. And, yes, they're venomous! Now, having said that, most centipedes that you will come in contact with are going to be harmless, but you will feel the bite of many of them if you actually get bitten - which you probably won't.
Finally, consider their rather imaginative names. "Centipede" means "one hundred legs", which it doesn't have! "Millipede" means "one thousand legs" which in most cases is also completely
untrue. Both are huge exaggerations of the numbers of legs these guys have, but it's an indication, perhaps, of what people think when they see all those legs! However, in the case of one particular species of millipede, the name gets close. The record is 750 legs!! That's FAR more legs than any other creature on Earth!
Amazing creatures from an amazing Designer!
