I have an uneasy relationship with a movie that we always watch at Christmas time. It’s called “It’s a Wonderful Life!”, starring Jimmy Stewart. We always enjoy the movie for what happens to the main character, George Bailey, and how he gets out of his
terrible situation. It shows the value of developing and cherishing friends over your lifetime.
However, one thing that bothers virtually everybody who sees the movie (and in fact, the man who produced it, too) was that the bad guy, “Mr. Potter” gets away with a felony at the end of the movie. He’s a bad guy throughout the movie, and everyone wants to see justice at the end.
BUT! He doesn’t get
it! He blatantly steals $8,000.00 in cash from the little “Bailey Building and Loan” company that’s been struggling throughout the whole movie, trying to help poor people who are in need of decent housing so they don’t have to pay the exorbitant rental rates in Mr. Potter‘s units.
While the end of the movie is happy in that George Bailey is saved from the consequences of having “lost” the $8,000, everyone who sees the movie is very dissatisfied that justice is not served. The writer of the script, Frank Capra, even by his own
admission, could have easily written into the script a satisfying ending that would allow people to have their natural sense of justice satisfied.
Throughout the movie, Mr. Potter does not commit any blatant crime, but he does when he steals the $8,000! But, the movie ends with him not having been caught! This is very dissatisfying!
But, it reminds me of another account, a true one, where the
“good guy“ also wins at the end, but the bad guys don’t “get theirs”! In my humanity, I would love to have seen a slightly different ending! But, there’s a very distinct reason why that story had the conclusion that it did.
The central character in that account is Jesus! The event is the resurrection! continued….
