Remember your Creator in the days of your youth! |
One of the most popular animals on our African Wildlife Safari is the elephant. They are astonishing creatures that can actually hide very well in the bush despite their size. When they get close to our vehicles, though, it can get very exciting! Like all
creatures, God has designed them with amazing attributes. Just consider a few things about an elephant: 1 - They're the largest land mammals, consuming an average of 300 lbs. of food per day. Elephants can weigh up to 12,000 lbs. 2 - Elephants are
browsers, meaning that they mainly eat leaves and branches. 3 - Their trunks are incredibly versatile, being used for such things as smelling, touching, holding or gripping things, siphoning water (up to 2.5 gallons!), etc. The very end of an African elephant's trunk has two "fingers" that can be used to handle small objects.
4 - An elephant's trunk has over 40,000 muscles! Consider that compared to a total of just over 600 in humans! 5 - Elephants have a much stronger sense of smell than
bloodhounds, and can smell water miles away.
6 - The tusks are actually incisor teeth. Elephants become "right-tusked" or "left-tusked", much like humans are either left or right-handed. 7 - Elephant tusks continue to
grow throughout their lives. 8 - Elephant skin is thick and wrinkley. This helps to cool them down. 9 - Elephants cannot jump. Nor can they "run" in the traditional sense. It's more like a very fast walk, up to 16 MPH. 10 -
The gestation period for an elephant is longer than any other animal -- about 22 months. Babies are about 200 lbs., and can walk within about 20 minutes of their birth. The list could go on! As in all other creatures, incredible features, instincts, designs and abilities have all been included according to what their Designer wanted!

PS - We will be
at Lebanon Valley Bible Church this coming weekend, March 1 & 2, for another seminar series. This one is called "Creation Safari 2: Going Deeper". PS - For those of you who have told me that you are continuing to pray for my back situation, thank you so very much! We just met with the surgeon this last
week, and based on my most recent MRI and CT scans, I was informed that the surgery that I had two years ago will need to be completely redone with extra fusions. I'll let you know next week what's being planned... PS - We have a bit of an emergency on our hands at the moment, and we would ask you to pray for the
situation, please. We received an urgent call from a colleague, a friend who also has a creation ministry in Michigan. He needs me to cover for him in Panama while he is away with his wife to help with their son and daughter-in-law, who was just diagnosed with stage four cancer. They are missionaries in the Comoros Islands. They flew her to Johannesburg, South Africa, where emergency surgery was performed and her cancer diagnosed. Please pray for Bruce and Robin Malone, and their son and
daughter-in-law, and their three children. I do not know their names. Pray for Carrie and me as we changed our schedule. As you read this, we are driving to Birmingham Alabama, to take part in a special conference. Rather than starting to drive home on Saturday at the conclusion of the conference, we are driving to Atlanta, and then flying out the next morning, Sunday, to teach in Panama over the next several days. We will return to Atlanta on Tuesday evening, and then start heading
home. |
