This is a female killdeer, a member of the plover family. Why is she on the ground like this, and what is she doing with her wings?
Probably most of you reading this will already know, but for those who don't, she's faking a broken wing! Why is she doing that? Because she lays her eggs on the ground, usually on or near some stones since the eggs look exactly like that. If you come near her, she sits very still since she herself is also quite camouflaged. However, if you -- or a cat, or any other creature she considers dangerous -- gets too close, she will immediately leave gthe nest and rush away,
making loud noises. She will also drag a wing, flap it around, and pretend to be in terrible distress since her wing is "broken". It's not, of course, but this will make a predator think she's an easy catch, and go for her! The trick will then work! At the last moment, she'll fly away and leave the predator headed in the wrong direction, away from the eggs and without her as a meal!
This is brilliant! How does evolution explain this?! This bird does not know what death is, does not know what a broken wing is, does not know that imitating a broken wing will make her appear to a predator to be an easy catch. Furthermore, why don't all birds do this? The questions could go on and on.
The truth is that each creature is specifically designed. That's obvious even to evolutionists (who claim that chance and time did the designing, of course). Each creature has its own, unique instincts, colors, habitat, calls, etc. Evolution cannot begin explain all this!
This bird is just one of many that live around us.
And they each do different things according to their designs and instincts. As we watch all of them, we're constantly reminded of the incredible Creator!
