Hi ,
Occasionally, people will ask if there's evidence for the Garden of Eden somewhere in the
Middle East, probably in Iraq somewhere. They actually get this idea from two main sources: 1) This area has been called the "cradle of civilization" since it seems that most civilizations trace their origins to that region, and 2) The Bible mentions the Tigris & Euphrates Rivers in Genesis 2.
However, if the garden is indeed there somewhere, then it's buried under many layers of sediment laid down by the global flood. It really could be anywhere. Remember that civilizations can be traced back to this area only because it's the general region where Noah's ark landed. So, from there, people and animals
spread out over the whole earth after the flood.
In terms of the two rivers, remember that the modern Tigris & Euphrates are major rivers. In Genesis 2, they aren't at all! Furthermore, there weren't just two - there were four (the Gihon & the Pishon being the other two). The
four of them were "heads" or "headwaters", merely streams that fed into ONE river at Eden, and the Bible does not give us the name of that river.
So, the exact location will always be a mystery while we live on this Earth. Someday, when we're with Jesus, we'll
know!
In Christ,
