Hi ,
Lions are incredible creatures. It's interesting to note that the devil is described as a lion, but so is Jesus! We once heard a lion at twilight roaring near our open vehicle. Even though it was facing away from us, the roar literally shook the vehicle. I had no idea a lion could produce such volume! It sent shudders up and down our spines. The first thing I thought when it began to roar was "the Lion of Judah"!
That's a "fearful good!" But, I've watched lions devour their prey, and that's how the Bible describes the devil -- a lion seeking whom he may devour.
Of course, they don't start out so fearful. They start out being about as cute as a baby animal can be! Click on the link below to watch a short video I just took of two cubs playing next to our Landcruiser. We often see lions on our wildlife safaris, but not normally babies.
Like all creatures, lions have interesting facts about their existence. Here are a few:
1. Lions spend most of their time sleeping — up to 20 hours a day!
2. A lion can communicate by roaring, and can be heard up to five miles away!
3. Lions are one of the “Big 5” African animals, which is a term used by hunters to describe the difficulty in tracking certain animals.
4. Female lions do most of the hunting, but sometimes the size of the males is needed to bring down large prey.
5. Male lions are bigger than the females, and can weigh 420 pounds.
6. Even though the lion is considered “the king of beasts”, they yield ground to heavy animals like elephants and rhino. Lions are opportunists, though, and will try to catch any animal if they think they can do it.
7. Lions have sharp rasps on their tongues, which can scrape meat off of bones.
8. Lions can eat up to 90 pounds of meat at a kill!
9. Lions live in groups, called prides. Mostly, these are made up of related females. Sometimes there are males in the pride, too.
10. Sometimes females in the same pride have cubs at the same time, and any cub can suckle from any female lion as long as she is producing milk.
11. As he gets older, the mane of a male lion gets darker.
12. Lions can live up to 10 years in the wild.
Like all creatures, without exception, lions exhibit amazing design! God has indeed created diversity that always fascinates us, and that we can continue to enjoy. His creation is proof that He exists; the Bible then tells us much more about this wonderful Creator!
