Hi ,
The bug world is truly amazing! It's full of creatures that seem to have only two functions: Find food, and find a mate. And then they die. Boy, that's exciting!
I mean, you don't see ants playing games. You don't see cicadas laughing about how weird preying mantises look. You don't ever see spiders gathering to discuss the latest hunting techniques. Bugs all just do what they do, by instinct. They don't seem to enjoy anything, either. Certainly not like the higher animals, like dogs. (Cats, by the way, are probably a lot like bugs - they don't enjoy anything, have no
personality, and don't seem to know much. 🤣)
But, many bugs don't eat plants, they eat each other. And, many of these seem to hunt indiscriminately. It appears that they go for anything that looks or moves like potential food, and in so doing, can sometimes become food! Some hunt, while others are programmed to wait in ambush.
One bug that masters the art of hunting beyond most members of its kind is the Portia jumping spider. This spider displays unusual traits while it hunts, and is considered by many experts to be the world's most intelligent spider. For example, if it's attacking another spider (a common practice), it seems to be able to sense the exact direction from which to attack, depending on the potential danger involved. It also
employs various means of deception. It will sometimes walk like an ant (which most creatures don't like to eat), or mimic another creature to fool its victims. It seems to be able to think through strategies, and modify tactics to complete a hunt. They also seem to be able to learn from mistakes!
