Hi
,
Actually, it isn't that there's fire in the tunnel; it's that the tunnel saves lives from fire!
What tunnel? Whose tunnel? Where is it?
The tunnels I'm referring to are made by gopher tortoises. They live in various states in southern USA. In these areas, there are a lot of pine trees. These trees are somewhat resistant to fires, but the underbrush, and the creatures that live there, are not.
Gopher tortoises live in this area, too. They dig holes in the sandy soil that can be up to 9 feet deep, and up to 50 feet long. It seems, though, that for some reason, one hole is not enough, so they will often dig many. A gopher tortoise will sometimes dig as many as 35 of these holes! But.... why? It really doesn't benefit the tortoise to have more than one.
This is where the amazing part kicks in! There are often fires in these areas, and many of the creatures that live on the ground would die. BUT, they know about the holes! And when there's danger, many of them will flee to the holes, where, remarkably, the creatures hiding there seem to get along just fine as long as they're there! All kinds of creatures use them - snakes, mice, armadillos, etc.
And, they will also use the holes when it gets hot outside. In the hole, the temperature is nice and cool.
The evolutionist community would teach us that creatures selfishly do what they can to survive - it's "survival of the fittest"! Tortoises don't have huge territories, like lions, so they don't travel very far. So, what benefit would so many holes provide to a tortoise? It only needs one to survive a fire.
The answer has nothing whatsoever to do with evolution. It's plain that God equipped the tortoise to dig holes for reasons beyond the survival of the tortoise! It's an amazingly designed world that we live in!....
